Anagen (Growing Phase)

The hair growth cycle begins with the Anagen phase. About 85-90% of follicles will be in the Anagen phase at any one time. This phase typically lasts between 2 years and 7 years. During the Anagen phase, hair follicles are well connected to the blood supply and are pushing out hairs that will continue to grow until the hair is cut or falls out as it reaches the end of its life span.

Catagen (Transition Phase)

The next stage is a transition phase called Catagen. Approximately 1% of hair follicles are in the Catagen phase, lasting about 10 days. In the Catagen phase, the hair stops growing and becomes detached from the base of the follicle as the follicle moves away from the blood supply. The hair bulb then begins to break down, resulting in the hair follicle becoming shorter.

Telogen (Resting Phase)

About 10-15% of all hair is in the Telogen phase at any one time. Telogen is the resting phase and the hair does not grow but stays attached to the follicle during this phase. At the end of the Telogen phase, as the old hair detaches itself from the follicle (also known as Exogen Phase or shedding phase), the hair follicle restarts the Anagen phase and a new hair begins to grow.

Mathematically, to combat hair loss, it is important to increase the amount of hair residing in the Anagen phase and at the same time, decrease the amount of hair in the Telogen phase such that the Anagen/Telogen ratio is more than nine.
