Micro-Needling Therapy For Hair Growth

Micro-Needling Therapy For Hair Growth

Micro-needling works by creating microscopic punctures on the scalp, seeking to stimulate hair follicles and trigger hair growth. The natural body healing mechanism kicks in.

Derma rollers or scalp rollers are devices that have microneedles that prick the skin and support hair growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp. They work by causing micro-injuries to the skin without significantly damaging the skin barrier. These micro-injuries heal quickly, leading to stimulation of collagen and elastin fiber production, which can improve the appearance of the skin. They may also help improve how medication reaches the skin, as micro-injuries allow medications, oils and serums to penetrate the skin barrier more easily.

This is how one can perform scalp rolling at home:

1. Divide your hair into sections and systematically roll over them with the roller. This will ensure that you cover the entire scalp or desired areas

2. Run the roller across the scalp in multiple directions: horizontally, vertically, and diagonally — in an order that you feel comfortable with

Press down firmly enough so one feels some pressure, but not so hard to the point that one experiences pain.

There is evidence that scalp rollers can benefit hair growth. Most studies investigate the effects of micro-needling alongside another therapy, such as minoxidil, and there is not enough research evaluating the use of scalp rollers on their own for hair loss. A 2021 review found that micro-needling may be more effective at increasing hair growth than minoxidil. However, using minoxidil and micro-needling together was more effective than micro-needling alone.

In addition to increased hair growth, density, and thickness, a scalp roller can encourage collagen production, stimulate cell turnover, and improve scalp circulation, which provides a healthier environment for hair to grow. However, it is important to use scalp rollers safely and effectively to avoid skin irritation, infection, and other complications. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare professional for more advice.
