Norwood Scale | Male pattern baldness measurement chart

The Norwood Scale: A Guide To Male Pattern Baldness

The Norwood Scale classification system measures the extent of male pattern baldness in men. Male pattern baldness is a common condition that affects many men as they age. The Norwood Scale has seven stages and it shows how the hairline recedes and the bald area on the top of the head (the vertex) expands over time. The stages are based on the observations of Dr. James Hamilton in the 1950s and Dr. O’Tar Norwood in the 1970s.

Doctors use the Norwood Scale to help diagnose the degree of hair loss, discuss treatment options, and monitor the effectiveness of treatment. Some of the treatment options that doctors typically recommend include medications – topical and/or oral consumption – such as Minoxidil and Finasteride, that can slow down or stop hair loss and stimulate new hair growth.

Another treatment option is hair transplant surgery, which involves moving healthy hair follicles from one part of the scalp to another with the aim to restore the natural appearance and density of the hair. The two main methods of hair transplant surgery are follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE).

In FUT, the surgeon cuts a strip of scalp skin from the back or side of the head and then divides it into small grafts that contain one to four hairs each. The grafts are then implanted into tiny holes made in the bald area. In FUE, the surgeon uses a special device to extract individual hair follicles from the donor area and implant them to into the recipient area. Both methods require local anaesthesia and usually takes several hours to complete. Stitches or staples will be removed approximately ten days after the surgery.

The Norwood Scale can also help people with male pattern baldness cope with their condition better as hair loss can often affect a person’s self-esteem, confidence, and mental health. At Raise, we have formulated a range of science-based products that complement one another to slow hair loss and stimulate hair growth.
